Here's the explanation of the accident at the airport. I'll
try my best to explain about the accident. Our program director,
Estefi, told us about a moving ramp that went up to the second floor
where our departures for the USA were. She finally said she couldn't
put that word into English but we all thought she was describing an
escalator. Believe me there is no word to describe this in any
language. When we arrived at the airport she showed us where to go
and then went to get the other group headed to Maderia for the post
trip. There were posts about 3 feet tall with just enough room to
squeeze your luggage through. Once through the posts there's a metal
moving steep ramp to take you to the second floor. I got on with the
carry on and after only a few feet felt the carry on roll backward.
Bill was behind me with the 2 luggage bags. The next thing I knew
Bill was flat out on the ramp and luggage and his hat were
everywhere. I'm not sure what happened but somehow his shoelace got
stuck in the metal moving grate and he couldn't get up. Everyone at
the bottom was trying to find a stop alarm but couldn't find it. He
ended up riding the ramp the whole way. As much as I don't want any
grandchildren playing football, this is one time where football was
good. Bill always said it taught him how to fall. The whole event
scared the daylights out of me. He ended up with cuts on his arms
but thankfully no broken bones. One of the travelers from the group
was an EMT and tried to take care of him but said he didn't have any
supplies. One of the police went to get the airport EMT person.
While we were waiting for him to arrive, Estefi came running up to
see what happened. One of our group had told her about the accident.
The EMT person showed up and thankfully Estefi could speak
Portugeese. Even with the excitement at the end, we had a wonderful
trip. I'll post some photos when we get caught up.
So glad Bill was not seriously hurt. What a ride!
