Quartzsite Day 3--2018

Quartzsite, Arizona
BLM Land

Another gorgeous day in Arizona.  George and Linda wanted to drive to Poston to see the Japanese internment camps. All the years we've been coming to Quartzsite we haven't seen it, so we rode along.

Our first stop was to see the Hi Jolly Monument.

If you've never heard of Hi Jolly you can click on this photo to enlarge the explanation.

I was surprised as we entered Poston there was no signage to show the monument.

The Memorial Monument is 30 feet high and 7 feet wide and has a hexagonal base in the form of a Japanese stone lantern.  From a distance it looked like the number one, but actually is a spout to prevent rain water from staining the sides of the obelisk.

17,867 United States citizens of at least 1/16 Japanese ancestry were incarcerated at this site from May 5, 1942 to November 28, 1945.

There were three camps here and they were only allowed to bring what they could carry.

We stopped at Blue Water Casino for lunch.  They were remodeling the casino and had the main entrance closed.  Note to ourselves, park on the left when we stop for lunch going to Winter Blast next month.

George and Linda have never toured Parker Dam so we drove up the California side of the Colorado River.  We were thrilled to see how healthy looking the wild burros were.

Unfortunately, we did see people stopping to feed them.

There were barricades at the dam that said no trucks or RV's and it looked very narrow.  George decided he'd turn the dually around and go back down the California side.

I took my kite out and tried to get it in the air, but the wind died down.

Meet and Greet started at 4 pm and it was nice to see so many first timers here.  We called it a night and went inside when the campfire started.

Another great day in the desert.

  1. The internment was a very sad episode in the life of our nation. I'm sorry to see the current political climate profiling groups again. Not surprised at the number of first timers as I said in my comment on your second day. A lot more RVs on the road in the past 2 years or 3.

  2. I haven't seen Hi Jolly. Seems I'm always just traveling through. I LOVE your kite! Come to Tucson ... it's 20 mph winds and your kite would fly just fine.

    1. We're predicted to have winds here on Friday. It will probably be too windy then.

  3. Oh my gosh. All the times we have been there, we have never visited Japanese internment camps. Thanks for the heads up.
    Enjoy your get together.
