Van Horn, Texas
Desert Willow RV Park
It was a perfect driving day as we left Deming, so I drove today.
Just as we approached the rest area in Las Cruces, Carlena called to ask what was wrong. They saw a lot of smoke coming from us. We pulled into the rest area and when Bill opened the hood on the truck, you could smell battery acid.
The battery caps blew off. In no time at all, Harry found a board, got out a saw and cut the board. He and Bill got out their knives and carved the wood to fit. He put duct tape over the top of the wooden plugs. I had just cleaned out the junk drawer at home and thrown away about a dozen corks from wine bottles. Wish I hadn't cleaned out the drawer as they would have worked.
Walmart was 5 miles away so we all drove over to it. We had just replaced the batteries on Thursday in Casa Grande.
Bill unhitched the truck and they put it in the bay. They did rinse off all the battery acid. Of course, they didn't have the 5 year batteries and we had to settle for a cheaper one. They wouldn't install them, because our truck "was customized". Harry got on one side and George on the other and had them installed in no time. Thank you again, Harry and George. We were really bummed out but no one seemed to care about the delay. In fact, Carlena had broken a nail so she went in and had that taken care of.
I was following George and I lost him in El Paso, but Harry being the tailgunner stayed right behind me. It was nice having him do the blocking when I needed to change lanes. El Paso isn't one of my favorite towns. Finally caught up to George as we were almost out of El Paso.
We arrived in Van Horn about 4, I think. Not sure what time zone I was using as we've lost two hours since leaving Casa Grande.
Desert Willow is our favorite place to stay in Van Horn. Do you think the $13.50 for full 50 amp hook ups has anything to do with that? They also have WIFI and cable.
Not sure how far we will go tomorrow or where we will stop.
Turtle Safely.........
Oh no. I hate problems on the road or anyplace for that matter. Glad it was fixed quickly. We were happy to get through El Paso too. Don't like that town either. Your rate was cheaper than ours in Fort Stockton. However, we're settled in Kerrville and off the road for about a week. Safe travels!
ReplyDeleteWow!! How did that happen? Never heard of such a thing!!! Glad you are camped and resting up!!
ReplyDeleteNice that you were able to get your battery taken care of, now continue ton travel safely.
ReplyDeleteIf those were new Batteries from Walmart they should have been covered under some kind of Warranty. The Salesperson should have made certain the caps were on snug before giving them to you. Glad it wasn't too serious and a quick fix.
ReplyDeleteBe Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
Where are you heading? Will we see you this summer? We are in Defuniak Springs, Fl....panhandle area right now.
