More Driving and Eating

Brenham, Texas
Artesian RV Park

I've learned to enjoy my coffee in the morning chatting with our friends.  Bo is always waiting for us to bring her a treat.  Somehow, it's a more relaxed hitch up.  We seem to roll out around 9 am everyday with everyone ready to roll at the same time.

George led the way following 290 east.  The wildflowers are absolutely gorgeous.  We've heard about the Texas blue bells but our timing never allowed us to see them.

Traffic was terrible when we got near Austin.  Some kind of huge machinery was slowing traffic to a crawl.  It also was confusing when you're following a road and 290 east goes into two different directions.

Harry and Carlena had stopped for a pit stop and they were behind us a couple of miles.

I was driving today and when we pulled off in a parking lot for a potty stop I almost hit a sign and the curb.  Bill had me back up and make a wider turn but I made it without hitting anything.

When we were all parked and unhitched, we jumped into the trucks and headed to Blue Bell Creamery which closed in an hour and half.

No pictures were allowed from the observation area.

I must say it wasn't more than a few windows to look through.  The tour at Ben and Jerry's was much better.  I was hoping that they at least had an information sheet to give you facts and figures on the ice cream.

There was a map to show where in the United States you could purchase Blue Bell and also empty containers that gave you an idea of all the different flavors.

It was fun, like all our days have been with the Morey's and Schoolcraft's.  Since we had our dessert, we decided it was time for dinner.

George and Linda were in the lead truck, so we told them to find a place.  There was no question that it would be barbecue.

It was difficult to see the smokers with the reflection on the glass.

Everyone was pleased with Nathan's Barbecue.  I suppose at some point I'll get tired of brisket, but it tastes different at each barbecue. I'll just have to keep trying it while we're in Texas.

The park we are in isn't the nicest that we've stayed at but there is some kind of Antique Festival this weekend that doesn't allow us to use any discounts.

Harry bought some worms, so I can picture someone fishing in the lake here tomorrow.

The weather is predicted to have a cold front come through tomorrow.  Maybe we'll have to wear long pants in the morning.

  1. You got to experience what we've come to detest about Austin.... TRAFFIC! It's always bad, always! By the way, the wildflowers are called blue bonnets. The ice cream is Blue Bell. The blue wildflowers are the blue bonnets and the red ones are called Indian Paint Brush. The fields are magical this time of year.

    1. Thanks for identifying the flowers. Have these been planted along the roads?

  2. If the Antique Festival is what I heard, accommodations are hard to find for the weekend. Very famous and popular festival. I believe this festival is twice-a-year; spring and fall. We have friends west of Brenham, in a small town of Carmine. We did the Blue Bell factory tour 3 or 4 years ago before their health problems it was okay. Enjoy your summer. Lynn/David Cross

  5. I'm a big brisket fan if it's cooked right. Best brisket we ever had was in San Marcos, TX at Hay's County BBQ.
The blue bonnets are beautiful... especially if you run across a big field of them.
